British chemist Robert S. Cahn discovers an individual cannabinoid, which he later identifies as fully formed.

Two years later, Roger Adams, an American chemist marks history when he successfully isolates Cannabidiol (CBD). This research leads to the discovery of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The first breakthrough into understanding the effects of individual cannabinoids becomes evident, when Dr. Raphael Mechoulam successfully identifies the stereochemistry of CBD.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam makes another breakthrough, discovering the stereochemistry of THC. Revealing the cannabinoids direct relation to the psychoactive effects associated with marijuana use, discarding CBD as a mind-altering compound.

Research advances. Another landmark surfaces, when New Mexico passes the 1978 Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act, a bill which legally recognises the medicinal value in cannabis.

Pace and momentum continue during the 1980s as Dr. Mechoulam and his team conduct a study on the application of CBD for the treatment of epilepsy as a hypnotic.

A British pharmaceutical group begins official medical trials using CBD.

The introduction of the Psychoactive Substances Act in the UK makes it an offence to produce, supply, offer to supply or to possess with intent to supply, any substance intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect. CBD remains excluded from this act.
